🤘In the song ‘Flying High Again’, in his incredible 1981 album ‘Diary of a Madman’, Ozzy Osbourne sings ‘swallowing colors from the sounds I hear’ … and I get it.

⏳There are two lifelong constants for me, both of which I embraced at a very young age … working in our family’s wine cellar, and playing the piano.

🪢 The two are deeply intertwined for me … my two inner sanctums are the blending table and the keyboard … I feel equally at peace at both. For years, one of my pianos, a rickety older grand with a subtly off-tune saloon twang perfect for the blues, has graced the upper deck of the barrel room in our family’s winery in Napa. I used to play it almost every day, usually before or after everyone else was there. With the piano in the midst of all the barrels, the entire winery was my inner sanctum for many years.

Until, suddenly, it wasn’t …

Both are a magnificent melange of harmony and dissonance, although the approaches are a little different …

🍷 As a winemaker I lean into balance and structure, flow, easy edges and smooth transitions.

🎹 As a musicmaker, I explore dissonance and disruption, the sharps and flats, black keys, polyrhythmic tension.

⚖️ Combining these two joys was the inspiration for my upcoming auction lot for the Premiere Napa Valley Trade Auction.
